Create a partition folder for backing up the system data and choose the partition format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format drop-down menu.
Click the Apply button after partitioning your hard drive.
Next, create a backup of your system data using the Time Machine Backup feature.
Click the System Preferences icon at the Dock or click the Apple menu and select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
In the System Preferences window, click the Time Machine icon and select the Add or Remove Backup Disk option.
Now, choose the created partition on your WD easystore hard drive to start backing up your files.
Click the Use Disk button and check the “Back up Automatically” checkbox under the Time Machine icon.
Also, check the “Show Time Machine in the menu bar” checkbox from the Time Machine window.
If you wish to start a backup for the next time, click the Time Machine icon at the menu bar and select the Back up Now button.
You can also use the WD Discovery app for accessing the WD Backup software to back up your data.

The WD Discovery app installer is included on the WD easystore drive when it is marketed. It includes the WD Backup utility for creating a backup. Run the WD Discovery installer file and click the Install button to install the software. If necessary, update the WD Discovery app. Discovery Browser application is the successor to the venerable Bonjour Browser. Discovery is a utility that lets you see all available Bonjour services on your local network, including TXT keys.

I recently purchased a WD My Cloud Home Duo 4TB NAS to use with Time Machine and to store other 'off the MacBook' items.

Along with the device, which was very easy to setup and connect and use, came the WD Discovery application. It's got two apps embedded, WD Drive Utilities and WD Security. I have no idea what WD Discovery does. When starting either of the two embedded apps, I am directed to attached supported drives. There is no way to attach supported drives because none are listed to be attached.

I have been looking through earlier posts and the common 'thread' is that WD software stinks on a Mac. I am thinking that the only thing to do is to delete the app from my HD. If the NAS doesn't appear on my desktop automatically without running the WD Discovery at startup, then I can just connect using the 'Go/Connect to Server' in the main menu bar.

I saw somewhere in one of the other posts that 'left behind hidden files' caused problems with newly installed Apps even though the older Apps were Uninstalled properly.

Also, I have tried copying an 8GB folder with a thousand or more files directly to the NAS as a backup that would be directly accessible without going though Time Machine. I was taking two to three times longer than a new Time Machine Backup.

...and by the way, I have contacted WD support and they seem to be of little help...they are more than willing to be helpful, but do not seem to have the background with Macs to help. They suggest that rather than directly backing up that folder within my local network, that I use the web-based link to my NAS to transfer the files. I think that seems a little strange and far less secure.
